Into the Hudson

Mon, 9/25/06
Schenectady, NY to Troy, NY
3.5 hrs, 8.5 mi, 7 locks

Today is Amanda & Jason’s last day, and they have a 6:00 PM flight from Albany to Charleston. Schenectady, Troy, and Albany are pretty much one city with the canal and Hudson winding around and thru them.

We left the marina about 8:30 AM and head toward the Hudson,

but first we have a series of 6 locks, called the Waterford Flight, before we enter the Hudson.

Lock #2 is the last lock in the canal, and there is a visitor center and usually quite a collection of boats tied up at the terminal wall.

Then it’s north to Lake Champlain, west back to Syracuse and/or Buffalo, or south to New York City.

We head south and have 1 more lock (the Federal Lock) in the Hudson,

before we tie up at the Troy city docks around noon. As a note the Hudson here is subject to a 7 ft tidal change, so both the boat and I know we're getting close to returning to salt water.

It’s from here that Amanda and Jason get a ride to the airport from the harbormaster and head back to the children. I'm sad to see them leave,

but it has been a wonderful time. They have been great companions, and it was fun to see them relax and enjoy themselves as well as be able to share their experience. Again, a big thanks to the McDonalds and Ayers for taking care of the children, and making this all possible. I owe you big time.

I’m on my own tonight, until Brad and his 7 yr old son join me tomorrow, for the trip down the Hudson to New York City.
